Poor irrigation practices, such as insufficient water application, using saline water, and not maintaining adequate drainage can also lead to salty soils. Irrigation can drive salinization, especially if farmers are watering their crops with salty water. In this case, that means watering crops with salt water in their lab. Globally, over 3,700 acres — just over four times the size of NYC's Central Park — of farmland grow SaliCrop seeds. Karl Wallinger, a Welsh singer-songwriter who helped define college radio in the 1980s and ’90s as a member of the Waterboys and the founder of World Party, died on Sunday at his home in Hastings, England. His daughter, Nancy Zamit, confirmed the death but did not provide a cause. Mr. Wallinger suffered a brain aneurysm in 2001 that forced him to stop performing for several years. Following on the heels of the post-punk, new wave and new romantic movements of the early 1980s, Mr. Wallinger embodied something of a throwback to the classical pop and folk styles of an earlier era, with music and lyrics influenced by the Beatles and Bob Dylan. Though he rejected the label “retro,” onstage he looked like a stylish hippie, with long stringy hair and tinted round glasses that would have fit in at Woodstock.

He couldn't afford rent anymore after the program, but he's hopeful the extension will help him again. Basic income programs including those in Austin and Minneapolis showed that most recipients spend their payments on soaring housing costs. For the first year, the project gave participants either $1,000 monthly, $500 monthly with $6,500 upfront, or $50 each month as a control group. Some of his former coworkers found out he was living in his car, and they helped him find a place and pay rent.

Karl frequently surprised the world as a designer (he loved to turn heads), but it was as a friend that he surprised me most. Many years ago, when I was facing my first summer vacation with my children after my divorce, I was frozen. It was Karl, of all people, who sensed this and swooped in to lend a hand. Karl was perhaps even less a kid person than he was a porcelain person, but he went all out when I most needed it. A real relationship with Karl was an association and connection built incrementally, over years.
